18 years and a legal battle later, airhostess back in AI job

Mumbai: Eighteen years after she was dismissed from Air India during her second pregnancy, Sashikala Jatav rejoined the airline in Mumbai on Monday. Following a Bombay High Court order in September directing the airline to reinstate her, Jatav, now 50, was put on a refresher training course for Air India cabin crew.
Her lawyer Mohan Bir Singh said that she is now a senior airhostess and will fly in the international sector.
“She is eager to continue with Air India for the remaining years of her flying career,” said Mohan Bir Singh. Jatav, who has eight years before she retires at 58, refused to comment.
In November 1992, she was dismissed from service which prompted her to go to court. She had joined the airline in 1983 as a trainee airhostess. Between 1988 and 1992, she was on leave from the airline and had two children. The airline contended that she was overstaying her maternity leave.
According to a Supreme Court order, an airhostess can avail upto 14-16 months of maternity leave to bear a child. Out of this, only three months would be paid leave. This is because frequent flying is likely to jeopardise the health of the pregnant air hostess and that of her unborn child.
