Big scope for growth in aviation sector

Hyderabad: Indian aviation has a major scope for development as only a very minute per cent of the population flies now, chairman of Aeronautical Society of India (AeSI), Hyderabad, V K Saraswat, who is also the scientific advisor to the defence minister said here on Thursday.
He was speaking at the inauguration of three-day `Aviation conclave - 2010' which brought up many issues that confront the aviation sector in the country today. Some practical solutions were also thrown up by speakers at the conclave organised by the AeSI, Hyderabad on the topic "Aviation in the millennium. Are we geared up?"
Most military aircraft like MiGs, Mi-17s, Jaguars, An-32s and IL-76 are old and need replacement. The design capabilities of Indian scientists have already been proven with Tejas, Dhruv, Saras and Nishant and therefore the present situation provided an opportunity for development and manufacture of aircraft, Saraswat said.
He said the AP government has provided an Aerospace SEZ with many incentives. Chief minister K Rosaiah had also written to the Centre for setting up an aviation university in Hyderabad.
The ambitious A2 project by Britain where the aim was to realise a hypersonic passenger aircraft will pave way for further developments in supersonic travel in the near future. The focus was on designing new engines that reduce noise and improve fuel efficiency.
