Demand for civilian aircraft seen taking off

Hyderabad: The civil aviation sector could absorb about 250 aircraft in next three years, if the potential for regional airlines is properly harnessed, according to Dr A. R. Upadhya, Director, National Aerospace Laboratories, Bangalore.
Speaking at the ongoing ‘Aviation Conclave 2010,' organised by the Aeronautical Society of India (AeSI) here on Saturday, Dr Upadhya said there was an increase in demand for civilian aircraft.
In the Defence sector, he felt there was a requirement for about 150 combat aircraft.
Citing a recent survey, he said if airfare were reduced by 50 per cent from the existing levels for regional travel, the number of passengers could grow by 10 times.
On the requirements for industry growth, Dr Upadhya said Government-industry alignment and access to huge capital requirements were vital, among others.
Mr Krishna Kumar, General Manager, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), said his company was in the process of developing radio altitude meters (for above 20,000 feet) and automatic flight control systems, among others.
