Fewer flight delays this winter

Mumbai: This winter there may be fewer flight delays due to fog. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s (DGCA) decision to reduce the minima for low-visibility-take-offs (LVTO) - by 25 metres - is likely to clear the way for more flight movements from Delhi, which is the worst hit during winters.
Each year, air traffic in North India, especially Delhi, gets disrupted as fog engulfs the entire region. While planes can land and take off in visibility below the minima, it is subject to several conditions such as aircraft capabilities, crew capability, and airport infrastructure.
Delhi airport is the only one equipped with category III B instrument landing system which allows the planes to land with 50 metres visibility.
For take offs, the existing minimum visibility requirement is 150 metres for Boeing 737s/Airbus 320s and 175 metres for Boeing 777s/Boeing 747s. Now the DGCA has decided to reduce the visibility criteria to 125 and 150 metres, respectively.
