Kolkata: Five persons were arrested at the airport on Monday morning for planning to rob international passengers in the dead of the night. All of them have been remanded in jail custody for seven days.
A police patrol team chanced upon the five Raja, Rajendra, Ashok, Somu and Nilu (Nilkantha Pal) loitering around suspiciously near an airport gate that leads to Jessore Road around 2 am on Monday. When they failed to give a plausible reason for their presence at the spot so late in the night, police took them to the NSCBI Airport police station for questioning.
During interrogation, they five allegedly admitted that they were planning to waylay international passengers arriving in Kolkata and rob them.
All five live close to the airport and have been held in the past for harassing passengers.
This is the first such arrest in the airport. Crackdown against touts had been stepped up after an airport advisory committee meeting in September 2009. Last November, police and Airports Authority of India set up a joint force to track touts and record their antecedents.
