Flight services hit for five hours

Thiruvananthapuram: Flight operations from the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport was suspended for nearly five hours on Wednesday night after an Air India aircraft with 80 passengers and two infants bound for Dammam in Saudi Arabia got stuck in the middle of the runway while making an emergency landing.
The incident took place when the Dammam-bound AI 915 flight returned to the airport at 6.40 p.m. after the commander got a warning about a snag in the doors of the aircraft.
Sources said the A-310 aircraft made a ‘hard landing' and got stuck on the runway, forcing the authorities to close the airport immediately.
No one was injured in the incident although there were reports that smoke and fire emanated when the aircraft touched down on the runway and came to a halt. One of the front wheels got burst.
Airport Director G. Chandramouli told The Hindu that the aircraft was towed away to the apron by 11.10 p.m. and the runway was cleared for operations by 11.30 p.m.
