Hope floats for air cargo complex at Bajpe

Mangalore: Positive signals emanated from the stakeholders meeting for establishment of an air cargo complex (ACC) at the Bajpe airport held at the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) here on Monday.
An elated chamber president G G Mohandas Prabhu said that while Airports Authority of India (AAI) was eager to provide infrastructure for the ACC, Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) was willing to take up the custodianship of the complex. He said the Customs department was ready with the notification to facilitate the ACC, Air India was willing to provide three tonnes of cargo space in the flight in a week, which was positive for the establishment of the complex. He said they would move towards setting up of the ACC in three months time.
The chamber members will meet at the airport within a week, where Prabhu will put up the data regarding the volume of cargo that can be generated from the city for export.
During the meeting former chamber President Giridhar Prabhu said that freight rates have to be benchmarked to international level so that the freight rates from here to Dubai or elsewhere should not be prohibitive. He suggested the chamber get the freight rates from Cochin, Mumbai and Bangalore so that a comparison can be drawn or if the carriers have scheduled rates that could be compared to see if the rates were cost effective.
