IAAI convention ICON 2010 confronts zero commission issue

Kochi: The biennial three-day national convention of the IATA Agents' Association of India (IAAI) – ICON 2010 – held at the Le Meridien Kochi recently discussed many issues pertinent to the travel agents fraternity, especially the commission issue. The convention declared unanimously that commission arrears should be paid from March 5, 2010 – the date when the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) ordered airlines to pay them a commission on ticket sales as per both Indian and international regulations. The official order came after a Contempt of Court petition filed by IAAI with the High Court of Kerala.
Tom Vadakan AICC secretary and Sebastian Paul, former MP were also present on the occasion. Vadakan said, “..Travel agents need to tell the centre that commission is their legal right. Airlines are given landing rights by the country's government so they cannot dictate terms. The commission/transaction fee issue is going to affect the tourism industry and the exchequer and finally the country. India cannot be blackmailed in this way.”
