Kochi: Is it possible for an airline to deny seat at the last minute to a passenger, who had already reserved a ticket in a particular flight and was allotted a seat number too? Seems so.
The incident of a passenger being denied seat on a flight by Kingfisher Airlines on Friday, at the time of checkin, has thrown open the intricacies associated with the socalled 'overbooking' phenomenon. The phenomenon of 'overbooking' tickets in airlines has been causing hardships to air passengers.
Basically, it is a facility being given to airlines to accommodate the maximum number of passengers. Overbooking tickets is a totallyintentional tactic adopted by certain airlines.
These airlines check the usual rate of lastminute cancellation of tickets in an airline in a particular sector. If there is about 510 percent cancellation in a specific airline in one sector, they will issue 510 percent more tickets on the flight. It is being done under the assumption that the 'overbooked' or the additional number of tickets sold will compensate for the lastminute cancellations.
