DRI seizes ketamine, memory cards

Chennai: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 9.6 kg ketamine worth Rs 96 lakh and around 7,000 memory cards concealed in three bags at air customs warehouse in the airport. The bag containing ketamine was suspected to have been abandoned by a passenger at Singapore and sent to India, while the rest were seized from two passengers.
Ketamine was packed in 250 gm sachets inside a bag while the 2 GB Kingston memory cards were concealed in packing materials used to pack Nokia phone accessories that were brought in the two bags. Acting on specific information, a team of officials reached the airport and seized the contraband.
The bag with ketamine was detained at the airport after it came as unaccompanied baggage by a Singapore Airlines flight on August 27. It belonged to Kasi Viswanathan who had travelled to Singapore. It is suspected that he may either have lost the bag or it was mishandled. As no one came to claim it, the customs officials stored it at the warehouse without realising that it contained ketamine.
