Kannur: The Kerala Chief Minister, Mr V.S. Achuthanandan, today laid the foundation stone for the much awaited Kannur International Airport at Mattannur, about 20 km away from here.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Achuthanandan said that with the coming up of the airport there will be rapid economic development of North Malabar region and the nearby places.
About 26 per cent of equity will be with the Government, 23 per cent with public sector undertakings, 2 per cent with other institutions promoted by the Government and the remaining 49 per cent with the private individual and institutions, he said.
Presiding over the function, the Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr Praful Patel, said in 10 years India will be the third largest aviation market after the United States and China.
