Reinstatement of accused raises eyebrows

Thiruvananthapuram: Raising many an eyebrow, an Air India official charge-sheeted in a case of acid attack on one of his colleagues has been reinstated in service.
T Rajeshwaran, former airport manager of Air India at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, has been reinstated and posted at the Hyderabad Airport amidst a departmental inquiry pending against him, it is reliably learnt.
Rajeshwaran is an accused in the case of attacking former security manager of Air India in Thiruvananthapuram Airport, S S Batave, in April 2008 by hurling acid on his face. The city police had filed a chargesheet against him and three others at the First Additional Sessions Court here last year and the case is pending trial.
With the Air India authorities deciding to reinstate Rajeswaran and post him at the Hyderabad airport, many in the aviation sector wonder how Rajeshwaran could be issued an airport pass as he is an accused in a criminal case. The decision is also likely to trigger a tussle between the management wing and security wing of the national carrier. The attack on Batave was the outcome of the stringent measures he had initiated against the irregularities in issuing passes to temporary staff employed by a private agency, Universal Aviation Services, at the airport.
