Land dispute takes off to turbulent skies

Thiruvananthapuram: In a curious move, Biju Ramesh, managing director, Rajadhani group of hotels, has claimed that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the Kerala Road Fund Board (KRFB) had encroached on 25 cents of land belonging to him. The AAI had even constructed a compound wall around the encroached land, he alleged.
Reacting to a report in ‘Expresso’ on Thursday about the disruption of the road work at Shangumugham by a group of goons, Biju said the new Bypass road connecting Shangumugham Devi temple road to the road in front of the cargo terminal was being constructed partly on encroached land. "A case is pending before the High Court regarding this property," he said.
When asked how the largescale encroachment at such a strategic point remained unnoticed till last week, Biju said he didn’t "use to look after the property on a day-to-day basis."
"Moreover, it is 10 km away from my residence. It was only the other day, when I went there, that I realised the extent of encroachment," he said.
The Road Fund Board had begun the process of acquiring land for the new road in the area more than four years ago.
