Ahmedabad: Imagine being a guest in a city where the first thing you face on landing is the crisis of not finding your baggage at airport. That's exactly what the many foreign tourists and non-resident Gujaratis come across when they land at Ahmedabad airport. According to airport sources, more than 15 passengers complain of lost baggage everyday at SVP International Airport. The complaints go up to 25 during the winter as Gujarat sees highest number of NRGs flying to the state between November to January.
"Most of these passengers are travellers from US and UK. However, the problem is more severe with those coming to Ahmedabad via Delhi as the problem lies with the Air India hub in the capital," said a senior Air India official.
Most hard-hit are NRGs coming to Anand, Nadiad and Baroda who travel with big suitcases. "When luggage is transferred from a Boeing 777 to a smaller plane, airline staff purposely leave behind a few bags at Delhi or Mumbai as they can't overload the small carrier. Also many times they have import consignments like traveller's electronic goods for which luggage of other passengers is not loaded," said an Ahmedabad airport source.
