AAI asks state govt to acquire land for parking

Vasco: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has requested the state government to acquire land near the Dabolim airport in Vasco for parking.
It is seeking space to accommodate 1,000 cars and 100 coaches.
Airport officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the increase in air traffic has led to an increase in vehicular traffic at the airport and inevitably a dire need for more parking space.
Explaining the ground reality, Vasco traffic cell PI Dharmesh Angle said, "As per our statistics the airport has seen a 20% increase in vehicular traffic in the last quarter of 2010."
As the pay-parking lot outside the airport can accommodate only 200 vehicles at one time, AAI has asked the state government for approximately 40,000 sq m of land opposite the INS Hansa gate.
Sources said the special land acquisition officer for Mopa airport, who is also in charge of land acquisition for Dabolim airport, is in negotiations with the owner of the private property.
"We are very aware of the parking woes and the inevitable traffic congestion due to non-availability of parking space at the airport," said airport officials.
Angle explained that there are 7,000 to 8,000 footfalls at the airport (arrivals and departures) everyday during season time and a sizable number during the off-season.
