Bangalore spreads its wings on V Day

Bangalore: Another edition of Aero India has ended as Bangalore celebrated its love affair with the metal birds this Valentine’s season. There are, however, a couple of sad events that link aviation and Valentine’s Day in Bangalore.
One, this Valentine’s Day brings the curtains down on the famed Surya Kiran aerobatic team, which signed off with its signature Cupid’s Arrow stunt, professing its love for the city by writing its gigantic Valentine’s Day card on the city’s clear blue skies.
Secondly, it was on Valentine’s Day 21 years ago that Bangalore witnessed its worst aviation disaster as the advanced Airbus A320, boasting state-of-the-art fly-by-wire technology, crashed while landing, taking precious lives with it.
The scene of the crash, HAL Airport, has been the hub of India’s aviation activities for decades and the city has naturally become a regular host for Aero India, which is now one of the biggest aviation expos.
HAL Airport no longer handles commercial flights and as the air traffic moves from the southern skies to Devanahalli, the only roar in the air is from the fighters and transport planes flying in and out of HAL Airport.
