Common AI code may throw off flyers

Mumbai: Imagine going to the domestic terminal of the Mumbai airport, only to find out that your flight is scheduled to depart from the international terminal. This remote nightmare might soon be closer to reality for Air India flyers.
Beginning Sunday, the flights operated by the erstwhile Indian Airlines and Alliance Air will cease to operate under the IC or CD flight code. Instead, these flights will have a common code-AI. Only the flights operated by Air India Express will continue to fly under the IX code.
Consider this case: beginning next week, buying a ticket for Mumbai-Ahmedabad AI-686 flight would mean flying out from the domestic terminal since it is operated by the erstwhile Indian Airlines. On the other hand, a ticket for Mumbai-Ahmedabad AI-130 flight would mean flying out from the international terminal. The reason? Flight AI-130 is a London-Mumbai-Ahmedabad flight operated by the old Air India arm of the merged company.
