Indian Airlines and Air India merger formalises as new AI Code comes into effect

The merger of erstwhile Indian Airlines and Air India into 'Air India' takes a formal shape from tonight with the 'IC Code' of the two twin carriers turning to one and migrating to a fresh state-of-the-art passenger service system.

After today the IC Code of the former Indian Airlines, which catered to the domestic operations of the national carrier, will no longer be used and only that of Air India will continue to be used for both international and domestic operations under the Air India brand, owned by the newly formed National Aviation Company of India Limited (NACIL).

All flights of national carrier Air India departing after 0001 hrs on February 27 will carry the new mapped AI flight number, said NACIL, adding, 'Henceforth, all national and international flights, numbering nearly 100, will fly under the 'AI' code, thereby making the 'IC' code history.' It said migration to the new system began in the early hours today and continued till afternoon, during which special arrangements had been made for exigencies regarding new bookings, changes, redemption, refunds and ticketing.
Also, the move would help reduce administrative cost arising out of billing, ticketing etc, it added.
