It’s a virtual menagerie at Ahmedabad airport

Ahmedabad: Monkeys and stray dogs, one can find both moving freely on the Ahmedabad airport runway. After Wednesday's incident where a Finnair aircraft after being hit by a bird was grounded, it seems the airport officials have not been able to find a way to check the menace of stray animals and birds.
As far as the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPI) is concerned, it is the second incident of bird hit in 2011 after the one in January. In 2010, SVPI recorded 18 bird hit incidents, which was low when compared to 2009. In 2009, the airport was the third most prone to bird hits among all airports in the country.
"We were able to bring down the number of bird hits from 34 in 2009 to 18 last year; Wednesday's incident however, shows that the danger still lurks. The sky near the airport is usually full of birds. The reason could be the areas in the vicinity are home to slaughter houses that attract birds. Moreover, garbage disposed of in the open also attracts birds," said an official of Airport Authority of India (AAI).
