Mobile towers near airport in soup

Hyderabad: Mobile phones of those living near the Shamshabad airport might fall silent for some time as the district administration has decided to crack the whip on unauthorised cellphone towers that came up around the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport.
The decision was taken after a recent security meeting with the officials of the Airport Authority of India. “The issue was discussed in detail during the security meeting and notices were sent to the managements of the concerned cellphone towers to comply with the rules. As there has been no response, the concerned Executive Officer Rural Development (EORD) was asked to disconnect power supply to the cell towers,” said Ranga Reddy district joint-collector Mr Sudharshan Reddy. “We have decided to deal with the issue sternly as it is the district administration which would be blamed if something untoward happens,” he said. The administration feels that it should not be blamed if an aircraft crashes due to confusion in signals.
“We have learnt that some mobile phone companies went to court and got stay orders on our directions. We will get the stay orders vacated,” the joint-collector said.
