Thiruvananthapuram gets new Airport terminal

Thiruvananthapuram: After months of dilly-dallying, the new international terminal of the Thiruvananthapuram Airport was dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday.
International flight operations will commence from the new terminal on March 1.
The Prime Minister, in his inaugural address, said that with the new container terminal at Vallarpadam and the new airport terminal of international standards, thrust would be given for the development of transport infrastructure and connectivity in the state.
''These projects show the commitment of the Centre to develop Kerala as a major transport hub. We wish to make full use of Kerala's geographic location, excellent tourism potential and the talent and enterprise of the people," the Prime Minister said.
Manmohan Singh said that the Indian aviation sector had a potential to absorb investment of over US $ 120 billion, which would generate lakhs of job opportunities directly and indirectly. “Aviation sector had witnessed an unprecedented growth in the recent past and an exponential growth in passenger traffic is expected in this decade.
Creation of modern and efficient infrastructure at the airports to handle passenger volumes of this magnitude requires huge investment,” he said.
