Air fares hike on the anvil

Air fares are likely to go up soon. This is due to the proposed 10 per cent tax levy on domestic air travel in the business class in the Union Budget for 2011-12. On Friday, top airline chiefs met the civil aviation minister, Mr Vayalar Ravi, and expressed their displeasure over this tax levy. The meeting also took place in the backdrop of rising aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices, which have placed a huge financial burden on airlines.
All this may lead to a hike in airfares in the near future. The top airline chiefs, who had met Mr Ravi were Jet Airways chairman, Mr Naresh Goyal, Kingfisher Airlines chairman, Mr Vijay Mallya, Air India CMD, Mr Arvind Jadhav and IndiGo chief, Mr Aditya Ghosh.
