Airlines again object to Metro line near airport

Chennai: Airlines have yet again raised objections to the metro line that goes partially underground near the airport. Representatives of the airline operators raised their concerns at a meeting attended by Airports Authority of India (AAI) and metro rail officials on Wednesday.
After getting a no-objection certificate from AAI head quarters, Chennai metro rail has floated tenders to construct a metro line from the Officers Training Academy (OTA) to the airport. The line that starts as an elevated structure at OTA comes down to ground level and goes partially underground parallel to GST road as it cuts across the flight approach path to the secondary runway.
Safety experts and airlines feel that the line should go underground. Sources said that the airline officials raised their concern over the safety of using the secondary runway when a partially underground metro line will be running close to it inside the airport campus.
