Close shave for fliers as snag hits plane engine

Jaipur: Nearly 138 passengers on board a SpiceJet flight from Jaipur to Ahmedabad had a narrow escape after one of the engines developed a snag and shut down soon after its take-off on Thuesday.

There were reports of an engine fire but this could not be verified. The captain then shut down the Boeing 737's right engine and made an emregency landing in Jaipur.

The incident took place around 2.03pm soon after the SpiceJet flight from Jaipur to Ahamedabad took off. The pilot found that the right engine had some problem and he immediately informed the Jaipur Air Traffic Control and sought permission for an emergency landing. The aircraft landed safely at 2.08pm at the international terminal of the airport.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) ordered a probe into the incident. A senior DGCA official in Delhi said, "Soon after getting airborne, the captain heard loud noise from an engine. He immediately shut it down and decided to return to Jaipur. The plane will get a replacement engine while the damaged one will be investigated. The broken part could be sent to the manufacturer abroad, if needed.''
