Drug ephedrine seized at airport

Chennai: Air Customs at Chennai seized 6.9 kg of ephedrine, a narcotic drug from a Kuala Lumpur-bound passenger at the airport on Sunday. This is the first seizure of ephedrine at the Chennai aiport through which smuggling of other drugs like ketamine usually happens.

Ephedrine is abused as a stimulant and appetite suppressant. "The drug is worth Rs 6.9 lakh in India and Rs 69 lakh abroad. The passenger, Mohammed Ibrahim Aliyar, had concealed the drug inside sachets of pan. There were 1,600 sachets and 422 of them contained the drug. Every alternate sachet contained the drug. The contraband was seized based on a tip off from the Narcotics Control Bureau," said Commissioner of Customs (airport) R Periasami.

The passenger had not declared it, indicating that the drug available in India and probably illegal in some other countries has a market in the Far East. Since the passenger did not have any documents to prove that he was exporting the chemical, he was arrested under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985 and under provisions of Customs Act 1982.
