Evacuees from Libya unlikely to land in crowded Mumbai

Mumbai: Space constraints at the Mumbai airport have made officials of the Civil Aviation and External Affairs Ministries wary of using Mumbai as a destination point for Indian evacuees arriving from Libya. Till now Air India has operated six flights out of Libya; while some of them have taken off from Mumbai, all of them have landed at the Delhi airport, where the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has been able to devote an entire terminal for the purpose of Libyan evacuation.
“We are still looking into how we can best use Mumbai airport. The MEA is not equipped at the moment, but it is also that the airport in Mumbai is crammed,” said a senior official from the Civil Aviation Ministry.
At a meeting in Delhi with the Ministry of Overseas Affairs, an airport official from Mumbai is believed to have said that Mumbai international terminal handles around 30,000 passengers and would find it difficult to accommodate additional passengers from Libya. “They said it might be difficult to set up separate facilitation centers for passengers from Libya at the airport because of space constraints,” two separate sources in Delhi confirmed. MIAL spokesperson, however, said no officer from MIAL was present at the meeting.
