Immigration bureau to man airport, FRO

Panaji: The Union ministry of home affairs will take over the management of the immigration desks at Dabolim airport and the seaport at Mormugao by June 30. They will also take charge of the foreigner's registration office (FRO) in Goa.

"It has been communicated to us that the bureau of immigration which is under the home ministry will take over the management of the immigration desks at Dabolim airport, the seaport as well as the FRO in Goa by June 30," SP (Immigration) Tony Fernandes told TOI on Thursday. In other words, immigration bureau officials will replace the Goa police at the immigration counters of the airport, seaport and FRO.

At present, immigration services at major international airports in India and foreigners' registration work in seven major cities-Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Amritsar, Bangalore and Hyderabad-are handled by the immigration bureau. Sources said that as per the home ministry's instructions all airports in the country where international flights land are to be manned by immigration bureau officials.

"We have had several consultations with ministry officials over this and it has been decided that till the immigration bureau has its own staff it will continue to avail the services of the Goa police posted at immigration and FRO. Later, it may take Goa police personnel on deputation to work at the immigration centres and FRO," said a top police official.

With the immigration bureau to take over immigration activities at the airport, sources said that that the number of immigration officials posted at airport will increase manifold.
