Jet plans to lease out its Boeing 777s again

New Delhi: Jet Airways (India) Ltd plans to again lease out some of its long-haul Boeing 777 aircraft that are expected to return this year from foreign carriers, while using the rest to bolster overseas operations.

Four of Jet’s 777 aircraft leased to Turkish Airlines are returning in July-October, while three given to Thai Airways are expected by May 2013.

“The B777s are scheduled to come back this year and we have plans for that,” said Sudheer Raghavan, chief commercial officer at India’s largest airline by passengers carried. “Four are coming back: some we will use, some we will lease.”

The lease of a single B777-200ER fetches an estimated $12 million (Rs.54.2 crore) a year.

Until late last year, Jet said it planned to either extend the lease of the B777 given to Turkish Airlines or lease them to another carrier. The airline had leased them to rationalize capacity during the 2008-09 economic slowdown.

Jet has rights to fly to Rome and Amsterdam, in addition to the 24 international cities it already serves. The airline mostly uses 12 Airbus A330 for international operations, although flights to London from Mumbai and Delhi use three Boeing 777-300ER.
