Governor K Sankaranarayanan on Monday said the Navi Mumbai International Airport project in Navi Mumbai, which had been given the green signal, was well on its way of being commissioned by 2014. "With a proposed capacity of 60 million flyers every year, the airport will be able to absorb the burgeoning air travel demands," he said at the joint session of the state legislator. At the session, 11 ordinances , including four related to urban development, four regarding the finance and planning department and one concerning each of the revenue, water resources and higher and technical education departments, were also tabled.
K Sankaranarayanan said, The airport approval was delayed due to pending clearances from the union environmental department. However after a series of meeting by the state leaders with the union government and intervention of MPs from Maharashtra, the union environment minister finally gave its approval for the project (second airport for the city).
RaneOrdinances regarding setting up of an independent municipal property tax board to oversee civic tax assessment and collection, amendments to the auditing process for civic book of accounts, and bringing elected representatives in municipal corporations and councils, including the Mayor, in the purview of the Lok Ayukta, were among those tabled. All of these are mandatory reforms suggested by the 13{+t}{+h} finance commission and have to be put in place before March 31.
