Simian scare on Ahmedabad airport runway

Ahmedabad: Two gangs of Kubernagar and Sardarnagar are fighting for supremacy over the Sardar Patel International Airport. They are not underworld mafias, but a group of monkeys!

Owing to growing simian menace, the state forest and environment department has now asked the authorities of the Kankaria zoo to trap these monkeys. The decision was taken when two monkeys were recently spotted on the runway and a flight had to be aborted midway.

S K Nanda, principal secretary forest and environment department, said that the number of birds flying around the airport has dropped but the population of monkeys in the airport vicinity has increased. "Officials of the air traffic control ( ATC) tower have been spotting monkeys frequently now. Taking a note of their reports, we have asked the zoo authorities to take action."

Nanda said that the forest department was studying what was the reason for the sudden increase in the number of monkeys in and around the airport. He said that this was probably because of two groups who have been trying to establish their supremacy in the region.

Nanda said that not only capturing them but the forest department has asked the airport authorities to use scare guns to keep the monkeys away.
