Air India to get 2 independent directors on board soon

New Delhi: The civil aviation ministry will soon appoint two new independent directors on the board of the national carrier Air India, civil aviation minister Vayalar Ravi said.
The ministry is also searching for suitable candidates to fill the positions of chief operating officer (COO) and chief training officer (CTO) of the beleaguered airline. "We plan to fill the posts of two independent directors that are lying vacant," Ravi said.
"In the next week or two, I will approach the prime minister's office to decide on the candidates." These positions fell vacant following the resignations of Anand G Mahindra , vice-chairman and managing director of the Mahindra Group, and Amit Mitra, secretary general of industry body Ficci. While Mahindra stepped down from the Air India board last month citing conflict of interest, Mitra put in his papers earlier this month as he is contesting the assembly elections in West Bengal.
Both Mitra and Mahindra were appointed to the Air India board as independent directors almost a year ago, along with chairman of Ambuja Realty Development Harsh Neotia and former chief of Indian Air Force, Air Chief Marshal Fali Homi Major, to shore up the financial performance of the ailing national carrier. In October last year, the four directors had, in a representation to the prime minister's office, objected to the manner in which the airline's revival plan was being executed.
