New airport terminal to soon start operations

Chandigarh The new terminal at the Chandigarh Airport is likely to become operational this month. The terminal is receiving finishing touches and once complete — airlines will shift their operations here. The number of flights to and from the city will also witness an increase.
The new terminal building — which has been delayed by around a year-and-a-half — was recently used when a host of celebrities came to the city for the ICC World Cup semifinal between India and Pakistan in Mohali.
The building, spread over more than 12,000 square metres, will be fully air-conditioned and have modern facilities, including visual guidance docking system, escalators, conveyor belts and close-circuit television cameras. A comfortable waiting area has also been provided.
While the present terminal can accommodate around 150 passengers, the new one will cater to around 500 passengers at a time. In case of more than one flight scheduled to leave at close intervals, the space in the existing terminal proves to be insufficient.
For visitors to the city, symbols unique to Chandigarh, including the impressions of the Open Hand and the works of Nek Chand — the creator of the Rock Garden — among other things have been put on display at the terminal. The symbols associated with Le Corbusier, including the modular man, can also be seen.
