WC trophy still at airport

Mumbai: The International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup perpetual trophy remained at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport even on Tuesday as no one from the ICC came to collect it. The trophy had been kept at the arrival warehouse since Friday when it was detained by the Customs authorities for
non-payment of duty. The ICC, however, refused to pay the duty and said it would take the trophy back while returning to Dubai, where it is headquartered on Monday night.
Following this, the customs authorities had removed the trophy from the arrival warehouse and kept the same at the departure warehouse. “Nobody from the ICC has come to claim the World Cup perpetual trophy,” a senior customs official said.
Sources in the customs department claimed that “replica” (the perpetual trophy) was brought to India by an ICC representative on January 18 this year. A statement released by the world cricket body on Monday said “the promotional, perpetual trophy remains in the keeping of ICC at its headquarters in Dubai.
It carries the generic ICC corporate logo, rather than the logo specific to the 2011 event. That trophy will be reclaimed today and will travel back to Dubai with ICC staff, as was always intended.”
The official said that the department waited for the ICC representatives, but there was no word from them (ICC). “We have kept the trophy in the departure warehouse and they are free to take it back as there is provision for re-export of the legitimate goods on which duty was not paid,” the official said.
