Well under runway spoils Udaipur takeoff

New Delhi: Aamir Khan's famous line from ''Three Idiots'' — ''aal is well'' — could cause tremendous heartburn at the Udaipur airport. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) extended the 7,500-feet-long runway by 1,500 feet to allow bigger planes to operate and also give more safety margin to planes already operating there, in vain.
When the extended section of the runway was completed and preparations were on to make it operational for flights, a part of the new runway caved in. When AAI launched a probe, they found that the area that had caved in was built over an old well, which had been filled up with stones and sand by villagers who owned the land before its acquisition.
''This has clearly been an oversight. Land acquired for the purpose of extending the runway should have been scanned thoroughly to have a structurally safe airstrip. Any cavity like a well has to be tackled correctly, so that the airstrip can handle aircraft weighing hundreds of tonnes. The well will now be filled up anew and then the runway relaid,'' a senior AAI official said.
