Airlines won't 'overcharge'

Mumbai: Air travellers, particularly those hit by the ongoing Air India pilots' strike, can hope for some relief from high air fares and flight cancellations. In a meeting conducted by E K Bharat Bhushan, director general of Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), with all private airline CEOs, it has been agreed that airlines will not overcharge passengers due to a surge in demand for tickets. Also, the DGCA has shared AI's flight schedule with private carriers and asked them to file a flight plan in case any of them wants to operate a spare flight on that sector.
"There was positive feedback from the airline officials. As far as fares are concerned, airlines have been asked to keep these within the concerned fare bucket (category), Currently, fares are way above the appropriate fare bucket," Bhushan said. "Also, no passenger will be left stranded at the airport if AI has endorsed his or her ticket to a particular airline."
Bhushan said that AI's schedule has been shared with all private carriers so that they operate their services to fill those slots and help stranded passengers. "If any private carrier wishes to operate a flight on the AI schedule, it will have to file a flight plan with me before 5 pm tomorrow," he said.
