CM discusses rehab plan for Mumabi airport slum

Mumbai: With slum rehabilitation posing a hitch to the modernization of Mumbai international airport, chief minister Prithviraj Chavan on Monday convened a meeting to clear the hurdle.
The redevelopment of the airport hinges on the acquisition of over 276 acres of land, which is occupied by over 80,000 slums. Technical issues have posed roadblocks to the plan to rehabilitate all of these.
A large majority of slumdwellers do not fit the January 1, 2000, norm set for rehabilitation in the project.
Mindful of the fact that evicting them without rehabilitation could pose hurdles in project implementation, Chavan on Monday asked officials to explore ways to relax the eligibility norm.
Government officials were asked to examine the option of devising a special rehabilitation policy on the lines of the Central schemes like basic services for urban poor, and Rajiv Awaas Yojana , which do not specify any cut-off date for rehabilitation . The Central schemes require the state to contribute up to 50% of the share in rehabilitation.
