'Pilots' fight against graft, nepotism'

New Delhi: The Jet Airways' Society for the Welfare of Indian Pilots on Sunday wrote to civil aviation minister Vayalar Ravi, showing their support to AI pilots as their strike entered its fifth day. The letter, signed by SWIP general secretary Capt Karan Chadha, says: "We call on to the government and your ministry (civil aviation) to review the stand and take a more holistic and compassionate approach and implore you to direct the AI management to retract the dismissals of ICPA members/office bearers, and then enter into negotiations to find a way forward that is fair and acceptable to its pilots and in the interest of the national carrier."
The letter adds: "Only after failure of the conciliation process and left with no recourse did they (ICPA) resort to such measures. They are fighting to ensure their rights... they are taking a stand against corruption and nepotism and gross mismanagement of India's flag carrier. Kindly note that recently, AI pilots put aside their personal safety and... operated flights into tumultuous Egypt and health hazardous Japan..."
