Cash-starved, Air India employees resort to cost-cutting

Mumbai: National carrier Air India (AI) may no longer be in cost-cutting mode but its 28,000 employees certainly are.
Not having received thesalary for the month of May and other emoluments for the months of March and April, employees and their families are sticking to bare necessities and have cut down on their expenditure.
Since June, Rukmini Sharma (name changed), ground staff with AI, has been cleaning and cooking meals for her family.“Earlier we had a maid to do all the chores and cook food. We paid her Rs2,000 per month. But with no salary this month, I thought it was best to let her go,” says Sharma. “I’m really trying to cut down on other expenses too. I have not even had my facial this month,” she added.
“In fact, we haven’t even got our performance linked incentives (PLI) for the months of March and April,” said technician Manjeet Singh (name changed).“The PLI is 60% of our salaries, so we had to make do with the minimum basic salary. Even our savings are depleting fast. With schools opening, now we have more expenses due to books, fees, uniforms etc.,” he said.
