Government looks to rope in 5 new directors on Air India board

New Delhi: The government is scouting for talent to fill five vacant seats on the board of ailing state carrier Air India. It intends to induct the new directors - three functional and two independent - in the next two months.
Air India is struggling with accumulated losses of over Rs 13,000 crore, debts totaling Rs 40,000 crore and a fast depleting market share.
The government has initiated the process to recruit a director each for the airline's commercial, personnel and finance divisions. A hunt is also on across sectors for heavyweights who could help the airline fly through the turbulent weather with their energy and experience as independent directors.
The airline's board fell short of two independent directors after Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of the Mahindra Group, Anand G Mahindra, and former Ficci Secretary General Amit Mitra resigned early this year.
