Imported cheese raises a stink at mumbai airport

Mumbai: For almost a month now, consignments of high-quality cheese, cured meats and exotic vegetables flown in the city from Europe and the US have been left to rot in open areas of the Mumbai International Airport's cargo section because of shortage of cold storage space.
And while importers, airport authorities and the Ministry of Health's food inspectors are locked in a blame game, the city's fine-dining and five-star restaurants are feeling the bite of the shortfall in imported gourmet food items.
The space problem started after the recent implementation of new procedures suggested by the Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), an arm of the Ministry of Health.
Earlier, incoming foodstuff was cleared by port health officers in a couple of days. However, the clearance process now takes more than four days because of the stringent new norms -- and food that doesn't fit into the cold storage is left outside to rot.
