Kolkata airport roof leak leaves AAI red-faced

Kolkata: It rained outside. And it rained inside as well. Friday morning's heavy downpour sprung leaks in an extended section of the roof at the Kolkata airport domestic terminal, leaving rainwater dripping in the departure lounge.
While the swirling winds and heavy rain seeped through the edges of windows in offices and homes, passengers and airline officials at Kolkata airport were taken aback to see water drip from the roof and create cesspools on the floor.
Embarrassed over the state of the terminal that is already facing severe capacity constraints, Airports Authority of India (AAI) officials rushed to place buckets under the leakage spots and spread polythene sheets over X-ray machines.
Incidentally, the line along which the leakage occurred on Friday was the section of the roof that had been extended to create more floor space within the domestic terminal that was facing a massive space crunch. Built to handle 4 million passengers a year, it found itself struggling with over 8 million passengers.
