Monkeys stroll across runway, delay AI flight

Ahmedabad: Attention, passengers: We are three kilometres from Ahmedabad airport but cannot land. We have to be in the air due to monkeys on the runway. This was an announcement made in an Air India aircraft that had a delayed landing at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Wednesday morning.
Delhiite Neeta Kumar, who was on the plane, said: “We were initially booked on a Kingfisher flight that was scheduled to depart at 10.10 pm on Tuesday. Following a technical snag, the flight was grounded. Some passengers were flown out in a small aircraft in the night. The remaining passengers were accommodated in Air India flight AI 817. The flight took off at 6.10 am on Wednesday.
Neeta Kumar “It was to touchdown at Ahmedabad at 7.20 am. However, the pilot announced the plane cannot land due to monkeys on the runway. It was irritating but funny, too. I had never heard of such an incident before. The flight finally landed at 7.45 am,” said Kumar, who is in the city for a week-long vacation.
This is not the first time that simians have delayed landings. For past five months, the airport has seen troops of monkeys disrupting flight operation.
