No removing turbans at airports: Italy

New Delhi After more than four hours of discussions between India and Italy on Friday, the Italian Interior Ministry has agreed to recognise the turbans of Sikhs as a “symbol of religion” and will issue a decree to their airport security personnel not to remove their turbans.
Government sources in Rome told The Indian Express that a decree will be issued on Saturday morning by the Italian Interior ministry, which will prohibit security personnel at the airports to check turbans, except in cases of suspicion.
The meetings were held between External Affairs minister S M Krishna and his Italian counterpart Franco Frattini. Krishna is in Rome for the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy.
The latest move is expected to put a stop to regular complaints sent to the Indian government from Sikhs in Italy, especially in the last six months, as the Italian security agencies were asking them to open their turbans and get them checked in public.
