Amritsar: Suspension of operations by various international airlines from Amritsar's Sri Guru Ramdas International Airport has taken a toll not only on the business but also caused a lot of inconvenience to city residents and abroad. Singapore Airlines had closed its operations from Amritsar in February 2009 after operating from here for three years. Before that Jet Airways had also canceled its Amritsar-–London flight. At present, Amritsar is directly connected with only Sharjah and Ashgabat.
"But now passengers are moving to their destinations via Tehran, Sharjah, Ashkhabad, Delhi etc" said airport director Sunil Dutt while talking to TOI on Friday. He said during the past financial year a total of 8.2 lakh passengers flew from airport. According to Airport Authority of India statistics report, there has been a decrease of 27.1% in the international traffic passenger flow in the month of March 2011 with the corresponding period last year. In March 2011, 39676 passengers had flown from Amritsar while the number was 54393 in March 2010.
A large number of NRI's, students, businessmen who used to fly to various destinations across the globe via Singapore and London from Amritsar were disappointed as they had to plan their journey via Delhi.
