New Delhi: In a major security lapse on the part of the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), the Delhi Police has been kept out of the loop in planning and installation of CCTV cameras and other security gadgets within the IGI Airport premises. While the agencies like CISF and the Bureau of Civil Aviation Safety (BCAS) have been consulted, the Airport operator did not deem it necessary to involve IGI Airport police in the process, which is the only investigating agency looking into the cases reported in the area. The DIAL has admitted the fact in response to a communication made by Delhi Police regarding installation of additional CCTV cameras at some sensitive locations outside Terminal-3 of IGI Airport.
The Airport unit of Delhi Police has taken a strong exception of the matter, saying that being the investigating agency, it should have been consulted before installing CCTV cameras that play an important role in detection of crime. Nevertheless, not only did DIAL ignore the Delhi Police, but has also been dilly-dallying on repeated requests to install sufficient number of CCTV cameras on the roads adjacent to the airport boundary for better monitoring.
"It is a serious challenge for Delhi Police as far as detection of crime is concerned. The role of other agencies remains confined to maintaining security inside the airport, but investigation in case of a crime is the solely responsibility of Delhi Police. This is a grave irresponsibility on the part of the airport operator," said RA Sanjeev, Deputy Commissioner of Police (IGI Airport).
