AI, insurers spar on Mangalore crash payout

New Delhi: Loss-making national carrier Air India is, in the wake of the Kerala High Court order, working out a compensation package for the Mangalore crash victims that is higher than what had been offered.
On July 20, Kerala High Court had ordered Air India Express (a subsidiary of Air India) to pay Rs 75 lakh, each, to the next of kin of the 158 victims of the Mangalore air crash on May 22, 2010.
The airline has sought the opinion of the law ministry and other agencies concerned after differences arose between it and the insurer, the consortium led by Reliance General Insurance (RGI) Company.
The insurers have already disbursed around Rs 55 crore as compensation to the next of kin of 74 victims, who are largely high net worth individuals. This is in line with the Montreal Convention, where the compensation prescribed is 100,000 special drawing rights, which translates to Rs 75 lakh for each victim.
