Air India in salary dock

The delay in the payment of salaries by Air India came under judicial scanner on Tuesday, with the high court seeking a report on the Centre’s stand on the issue following a petition by an employee.
Ratna Karanjaiya, a cabin crew member who appeared in person before Justice Debasish Kargupta, submitted that she had not been paid for three months and sought an order to the public sector carrier to clear her dues immediately.
The judge called additional solicitor-general M.F. Rezzack, who has his office in the high court compound, and asked him to contact the “authorities concerned” and inform the court about the Centre’s stand on the issue on Wednesday.
Air India lawyer R.N. Majumdar admitted that the airline was not in a position to pay its 40,000-odd employees in time. “But what will the airline do if the Centre fails to disburse funds for paying the salaries?”
Majumdar said he was not opposing the petitioner’s prayer but added: “How can I say that the court should grant the prayer. What will be the fate of the other employees? If the central government provides us funds, there won’t be any delay in paying the salaries.”
