Bangalore: The Bengaluru International Airport (BIA), which has embarked on expanding its existing passenger terminal building and apron is also expanding its cargo facilities.
The Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), promoters of the airport said that with the cargo expected to grow at about 9 % during 2011-12, a number of new initiatives have been taken.
Hari Marar, president-Airport Operations, BIAL, told DNA that with the city’s perfect geographic positioning, economic activities, environmental aspects, and infrastructure, BIA is poised to evolve into the future cargo hub of South India, which would connect the West to the East.
He added that, to boost the cargo growth in the region, a few new initiatives have been taken by BIAL, which include establishment of a trans-shipment facility supported by customs to facilitate the movement of trans-shipment cargo, plant and animal quarantine office, and textile committee office, which will benefit the garment and apparel industry at the airport.
