Kerala govt, DGCA discuss Calicut airport report

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has taken up the CNN-IBN report on Calicut International Airport which exposed that the runway was not safe. A high level committee from the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and Air India met Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to assess the safety issues at the Calicut International Airport.
A Civil Aviation Safety Advisory Council report accessed by CNN-IBN warns that there's a chance of a May 22, 2010 Mangalore-type accident waiting to happen at the Calicut airport.
A 240-meter safety area beyond the runway is critical in case the aircraft overshoots but the Calicut runway doesn't have even the minimum 90 meters. Any aircraft overunning the runway will fall, possibly breaking up on impact.
