SMS system misses flyers' call

Ahmedabad: Upendra Patel was to board an Air India Ahmedabad-Mumbai-Newark flight last week. But as air services to the US were disturbed due to hurricane Irene, he decided to get the update about flight's departure through the newly-launched SMS service.
He sent a text message to '9909944909' along with the flight number and after an hour got a reply about schedule departure of the flight. Patel along with five others members of his family who came to see him off reached the airport only to find that the flight was cancelled.
Patel's case is just an example out of several of hassled flyers. Thanks to the non-cooperation of several airlines, the SMS and Interactive Voice Response (IVR) (where one can dial 22858056 for flight information) facilities launched at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International airport have utterly failed to help the fliers.
After the launch of these services a few months back, the onus was on airlines to update the arrival and departure of their flights but many most of them are not doing their part.
